Title IX
ABOUT THE
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. 1681 et. seq.
(Title IX)
Title IX is an example of how the 14th Amendment has been interpreted over time. Title IX, which is of particular interest to young people, prohibits institutions that receive federal funding from excluding students from participating in educational and athletic programs on the basis of sex.
Specifically, Title IX states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Generally, a school may not exclude, deny, or provide different or lesser services to applicants or beneficiaries on the basis of sex.
